Nishan Velupillay signs with Melbourne Victory FC U23's
Young defender joins Victory's NPL side
Velupillay, 19, has signed a one-year scholarship deal with the club and will join the squad for the upcoming 2023 NPL Victoria season.
The former Maroubra United defender has been capped by Australia at Under-17 and Under-19 level and is a highly rated prospect. He is expected to play a key role in Victory's defense this season.
Velupillay said he was excited to join Victory and was looking forward to the challenge of playing in the NPL.
"I'm really excited to join Victory," Velupillay said. "It's a great club with a lot of history and I'm looking forward to learning from the coaches and players here.
"I'm also looking forward to the challenge of playing in the NPL. It's a tough league but I think I can make a contribution to the team."
Victory coach Grant Brebner said he was pleased to have Velupillay on board.
"Nishan is a talented young defender who has a lot of potential," Brebner said. "He's a good reader of the game and he's very comfortable on the ball.
"I'm sure he'll be a valuable addition to our squad this season."
